What is Meditation?

Meditation is a natural human activity in which we can take time to notice the way our mind works and connect more deeply with our hearts. It offers a practical way of becoming morecalm, clear and alive to our moment-to-moment experience.

Through meditation we can cultivate mindfulness both while we’re meditating, and in our wider lives. With practice, we can learn to work more creatively with our states of mind and heart. This can have a truly transformational effect:

- Helping us to develop greater self-knowledge and wisdom
- building our awareness of others and the natural world
- supporting us to realise our greatest potential in a way that benefits ourselves and others.

The best way to learn to meditate is at a class with a teacher who can help you develop your practice. Here at the Cork Buddhist Centre we run regular meditation classes where you can learn how to meditate, or if you have been meditating for a while, we have experienced teachers to help you take your meditation to the next level. Meditating with others can enhance your practice and help you make connections and friendships with others on a similar path. We provide a friendly, welcoming space, and always lots of cups of tea!

At our meditation classes we teach simple but profound meditation practices rooted in the Buddhist tradition that were taught over two thousand years ago: the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Metta Bhavana (cultivation of loving kindness). The Mindfulness of Breathing practice helps to develop awareness, integration and an understanding of the way the mind works. The Metta Bhavana practice helps to cultivate positive emotion and a more open, caring and empathetic attitude towards ourselves and others. The two practices complement each other and together can have a profound impact on how we experience life.
